Our Team

  • Erik Schoonover

    PHD CANDIDATE

Erik is interested in the late-stage crystallization of granitoids, as it relates to the formation of continental crust, ore generation, and silicic eruptions. He uses a laser ablation system to depth profile zircons from across the world in the Penn State LionChron lab. The geochemical trends from the zircons provide a window into magmatic evolution. Comparing these trends will help us to better understand how granites crystallize and evolve. When not blasting zircons with a laser, he can be found playing video games with friends, hiking with his wife, or playing pickleball.

  • Emily (Em) White

    PHD CANDIDATE

Em is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Pennsylvania State University working with the Crustal Evolution Research Group, prior she worked in the Soil Microbial Ecology Lab at the U.S. Geological Survey after completing her B.Sc. in Earth & Planetary Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research interests are in early continental crust formation and the geochemical evolution of planetary bodies. Her project at Penn State explores the sources of magmatism for late Archean continental crust by utilizing various isotopic tracers within zircon and bulk rock of Neoarchean granites/granitoids. Her work is primarily focused in the Slave Province (Canada) and the Superior Province (US/Canada).

  • Rory Changleng

    PHD CANDIDATE

Rory is an enthusiastic field geologist and geochemist who came to the Reimink Group in 2022 from the University of St Andrews. He uses diamonds and zircon as tools to investigate the crust-to-cratonic roots of Archaean continents. His work is focused on the Slave Craton and is done in collaboration with the University of Alberta. Beyond science, Rory is passionate about exploring our natural world through whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, and wild swimming.

  • Renan Beckman

    PHD STUDENT

Renan is a PhD student at Penn State in Dr. Jesse Reimink's lab. Renan also graduated from Penn State in May of 2023 with a BSc in geosciences and a minor in geophysics. In undergrad Renan was apart of Dr. Reiminks lab for 2 years working on various projects, most notably the fluid dating project. This project became Renan's undergraduate thesis. Renan used uranium-lead and trace element data from detrital zircon to attempt to characterize and date reactive fluid flow from the Alta Stock intrusion. She continued her work after graduation and presented it at GSA Connects 2023.

  • Alex Cerminaro

    BSC STUDENT

Alex is a fourth-year geoscience undergraduate student, originally from Berwick, Pennsylvania. For the past two years, Alex has been an active member of Dr. Reimink's lab group, contributing to several lab projects and trials. Most notably, Alex dated a gold mineralizing fluid in a detrital zircon population located in Southwest Alaska. Following graduation in Spring 2024, Alex plans to pursue a master's degree in geology, specializing in economic geology.

  • Abigail Weiner

    BSC STUDENT

Abby is a 2nd year undergraduate working on a variety of petrological and geochemical projects within the lab.

Alumni

  • Dr. Georgia Soares

    POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR

Ph.D. Geology, BSc(Adv), Geology and Earth Science, Honours Class 1. I am interested in all things Earth and Planetary Science, particularly ancient Earth and fossils.

  • Cristy Stoian

    MSC GRADUATE

Cristy is originally from Potsdam, New York. She attended Stony Brook University for her undergraduate, where she studied geology. After graduating, she joined our group here at Penn State and completed her Master's degree, studying early crustal evolution and Precambrian geology. She is currently a PhD student at Colorado School of Mines studying economic geology.

  • Sydney McCarthy

    BSC GRADUATE

Sydney McCarthy was a double major in Geoscience and Finance, and worked with our group on modeling trace element concentrations in lithium pegmatite deposits.
